It lies 2.5 million light-years away and is the furthest object that can be seen with the unaided eye. The galaxy is about 152,000 light-years in diameter and has an apparent magnitude of 3.4. It is now considered about the same size as the Milky Way, containing 1 trillion solar masses. The Andromeda and Milky Way galaxies are projected to collide with each other, but don’t worry – it won’t happen for another 4 – 5 billion years!
