God’s Word Written in the Stars: His Redemption Plan is Visible To All

by Kenneth R. Dunn

Gazing up at the stars on a clear night we are in awe of their beauty. But did you know that God speaks to us from their depths? The Creator personally names each star and constellation (Isaiah 40:26) and placed them in the night sky to tell us the story of His plan for mankind.

Our loving God knew that although He would give man choices, we would not always make good ones. So He laid out a plan to redeem His creation and spread it across the starry sky.

This books will explain the star names and meanings as they present themselves each night and how the constellations unfold from month to month. “The heavens declare the glory of God … and night unto night reveals knowledge.” (Psalm 19:1-4). Begin to discover how God communicated His love and plan for man, and how God’s Word was written into the stars.

A Personal Message From the Author . . .

Ever since I was a child in the 1960s, I have had an interest in astronomy. That was heightened in 1969 when Apollo 11 landed on the Moon. We watched late at night when Neil Armstrong released his foot from the lunar module and dropped onto the Moon’s surface. Squinting at those fuzzy early TV pictures I realized that there was something much bigger than just the world in which I lived.

Much later as an adult in my 50’s, I was reading the ancient book of Enoch in hopes of learning more about life on Earth prior to the flood of Noah. It talked about the heavens that God created and that each star and constellation was assigned a meaning by God. As I researched this idea I found that God had allowed Adam to name all the animals of Creation, but God was the One who named all the stars (Isaiah 40:26 & Psalm 147:4). I wondered why God would name the stars? What were their names? Did they have a special meaning for me and the Church in general?

I had been a believer in Christ for many years by this time and I could not get this thought out of my mind. What were the names He gave those stars? Were their names important? As I began my search, I found there were two major works on the subject of the gospel in the stars that were in reprint. The authors of these 19th century books were Joseph Seiss (The Gospel in the Stars) and E.W. Bullinger (The Witness of the Stars). These first two books were not easy reads, but they were extremely instructive and played a major role in many of the ideas presented in this writing.

In 1981, there was a new author in the study of this subject. Kenneth Fleming wrote God’s Voice in the Stars which was both practical and well-organized. From his book I could see that he had read the authors mentioned above and brought new insight to the subject, adding in much of the new science and knowledge of the 20th century. I was excited to have a book that gave a concise and practical approach to the subject. I continued reading and studying the subject and wrote my first overview of the Gospel in the Stars as a note on my Facebook page in late 2012.

Finally, in 2014, I had a good grasp on the subject and I asked my pastor if I could develop a class on this subject to to teach the members. He was very interested and put me on a course to write materials for a class that would be doctrinally sound and true to the written Word of God. This book is the result of that effort.

I do not claim to be a scholar. I do not consider myself to be an intellectual thinker. I am not a linguistic expert. My effort in this writing was to make it practical and easy to understand for the average person, including myself. I decided to use Fleming’s book as my key resource as I found he had successfully paired down the important information and Scriptures from the earlier writings of Bullinger and Seiss. The format that Fleming used in his book made the subject matter easy to understand. I have chosen to use this same concise and organized approach in writing the material for this book. Also, I am a firm believer in the grace message of the Gospel and felt that the message we find in the “Star Gospel” is wonderfully aligned with that doctrine. I have written my conclusions on the meanings of the constellations with that alignment in mind.

The constellation sketches that were in Fleming’s book were carefully drawn and placed in their positions to each other as they appear in the night sky. My sketch artist also followed Fleming’s book as she positioned her sketches for this work. Ken Fleming’s book was a great resource for getting the pictures of the night sky correct.

I obviously did not research the names of the stars and constellations in all the different languages that you will find in this writing. Instead, I relied heavily on this amazing work of Francis Rolleston in her book, Mazzaroth. Her research originally compiled and published in 1863 in Keswick, England is extensive, having studied the astronomical names back to the original names of many old and ancient languages. Almost all of the star names and meanings in all the languages listed in this book come from her work. She was an expert linguist, having studied the Hebrew language for 17 years and read the Hebrew Scriptures daily throughout her life.

She also mastered Hebrew and Greek and completed her own translation of Homer. She became an expert in Egyptian Coptic and Egyptian Hieroglyphics. She studied and learned Arabic, Syriac, Sanscript, Aramaic, and Chaldee, and became a master of these root languages and their origins. Her book was compiled over 50 years of her life-long study of the star names. She was in her 80’s when Mazzaroth was published and her work enables us to easily understand the Word of God that is visibly contained in the stars.

All the resources in the bibliography have been added to the final product of this work. Some were used more extensively than others. In the end, I have put together my thoughts, ideas and beliefs as to the true meaning of what the heavenly bodies are actually saying to us. There is no doubt in my mind that God created and named the constellations and stars with a message and a plan to redeem the sinful lost people of His Creation. He put His message in the design and names of these constellations and stars. He has and will carry out His plan of redemption to the last detail.

That plan of redemption is a plan of grace. God’s grace shows that we, as created and fallen beings, are incapable of saving ourselves. Our righteousness is like filthy rags to God. God came to Earth Himself in the form of a man to present His body as the perfect Lamb of God, shedding His blood to pay the penalty for sin once and forever. He then raised Him to new life, conquering the penalty of sin and giving eternal life to all who believe in His name, Jesus. He will come a second time to destroy the evil one and release all believers from the bondage of this sinful world.

As you read this work, I believe you will see clearly the amazing message of God’s love and grace extended to you. All He asks of you is to believe He has done this all for you.
